BARANGAY FERDINAND

Brief History of Barangay Ferdinand

Masiguel was the old name of Barangay Ferdinand. Masiguel means something that protrudes, and in this case it refers to the huge rock that protrudes from the sea which serves as the landmark. The name was changed to Ferdinand when the place gained its status as a regular barangay on January 20, 1969. The name Ferdinand was taken after the name of the late President of the Republic, Ferdinand E. Marcos.

The residents recalled that in order for the sitio to become a regular barangay, they “borrowed” residents from the adjacent barangay of San Juan and from the municipality of Tubajon just to comply with the requirements on population.

In 1970, Ferdinand Elementary School was constructed Grade One was opened and the school; started with only 40 pupils. Additional grades were opened in the succeeding years. However, in 1982, the school was closed due to the conflict between the teacher in-charge and the barangay captain, according to the residents, a barangay hall was also constructed in 1971.

Barangay Ferdinand is one of the ten barangays of Loreto, Surigao del Norte. It has a total land area of 1,099 hectares. It is located about 7 kilometers from the población of Loreto and is bounded in the South by Barangay San Juan.
